NAIROBI, Kenya – A horrific discovery of six decomposing female bodies in a Nairobi quarry has ignited fresh outrage in the Kenyan capital, reigniting concerns over the country’s femicide crisis and heavy-handed police tactics.

Authorities cordoned off the area after the bodies were found wrapped in nylon and bound with ropes. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed the victims were all female and likely killed in a similar manner, though details remain scarce.

The discovery comes just weeks after a wave of anti-government protests demanding the scrapping of a controversial finance bill. The protests were met with a violent response from security forces, resulting in numerous civilian deaths and reports of disappearances by human rights groups.

This latest tragedy has sparked renewed public anger. A protest erupted outside the nearby Kware police station, only to be dispersed with teargas and gunfire. The incident underscores the simmering tension between residents and authorities.

“They were all women, all tied with the same color of ribbons, and the same color of sacks,” said Hussein Khalid, executive director of human rights group Vocal Africa, expressing concerns that more bodies may be present at the dumpsite.

This gruesome discovery follows months of advocacy against femicide in Kenya. Just recently, thousands of women marched demanding an end to the violence. The recent police reforms, including the resignation of the police chief, fail to quell public anxieties in the face of such brutality.

Kenya now faces the daunting task of addressing both the femicide crisis and the public’s distrust of law enforcement. The investigation into these latest murders will be closely watched, with many demanding a swift and transparent process to deliver justice for the victims and restore a sense of security to the nation.
