CAPE TOWN – A harrowing ordeal for an 11-year-old boy has sparked outrage and prompted a review of policies at Golden Arrow Bus Service, one of Cape Town’s primary public transportation providers.

The incident unfolded on Monday when the boy, a student at Simon’s Town Primary School, lost his bus ticket and was subsequently denied boarding by the driver. The child was scheduled to travel from Simon’s Town to Makhaza in Khayelitsha. The boy’s distressed mother turned to social media to publicize her son’s disappearance, igniting a community-wide search.

Fortunately, with the intervention of local law enforcement, the boy was found and reunited with his family. However, the incident has raised serious questions about the company’s protocols for unaccompanied minors.

Golden Arrow has responded by suspending the driver involved and initiating a comprehensive review of its policies regarding lost tickets for students. “We deeply regret the incident and understand the distress it caused the family,” said Bronwen Dyke-Beyer, a spokesperson for the company. “We are committed to ensuring that such a situation never happens again.”

While the child has been found, the incident underscores the vulnerability of children who rely on public transportation. Experts suggest that parents should equip their children with emergency contact information and instruct them on how to handle unexpected situations while traveling alone.
