Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – At least 157 people have tragically lost their lives following devastating mudslides triggered by heavy rains in southern Ethiopia. The disaster struck the remote Kencho Shacha Gozdi district in the Gofa Zone, with many of the victims reported to be young children and pregnant women.

Rescue efforts have been hampered by the challenging terrain, making it difficult for emergency responders to reach those in need. The situation is further compounded by the ongoing rainy season, which increases the risk of additional landslides.

Tragically, many of the victims were attempting to assist survivors of an earlier mudslide, highlighting the immense human cost of this disaster.
