Johannesburg – In a bold statement that has sent ripples through the African football landscape, TS Galaxy chairman Tim Sukazi has likened Orlando Pirates teenager Relebohile Mofokeng to Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal. The outspoken executive believes the South African prodigy possesses talent on par with, if not surpassing, the Spanish wunderkind.

Mofokeng, 19, enjoyed a breakout season with Pirates, capturing both the DStv Premiership Young Player of the Season and Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player of the Tournament awards. His performances earned him a call-up to the Bafana Bafana national team.

Sukazi argues that Mofokeng’s ability to impact matches at such a young age is reminiscent of Yamal’s meteoric rise at Barcelona. While acknowledging the technical brilliance often associated with European football, Sukazi contends that the faster, more physical nature of the South African league presents a unique set of challenges that Mofokeng has mastered.

“We have the talent from birth,” Sukazi said. “Our players are not trained to be talented. Mofokeng is doing things that are on the same level, if not better, than Yamal. Our league is much faster, and he’s navigating it at this age and deciding matches.”

The comparison between the two young stars is undoubtedly provocative, and it remains to be seen if Mofokeng can sustain his high level of performance and fulfill the immense expectations placed upon him. Regardless, Sukazi’s comments have ignited a global conversation about the burgeoning talent in African football.
