Paris – In a match marked by tension and drama, Argentina clawed its way back from a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 with Morocco in the opening game of the men’s Olympic football tournament on Wednesday. The result was a fittingly chaotic end to a match played out in a hostile atmosphere.

The Argentines, two-time Olympic champions, were met with a barrage of boos and jeers as they emerged onto the pitch, a reaction to racist chants sung by some of their players following their Copa America victory. The Moroccan crowd, clearly intent on making their presence felt, created a cauldron of noise throughout the match.

Morocco, the reigning African Under-23 champions, took a commanding 2-0 lead thanks to a brace from Soufiane Rahimi. However, Argentina showed resilience, with Giuliano Simeone pulling one goal back before Cristian Medina snatched a dramatic equalizer deep into stoppage time.

The match was not without its controversies. As Argentina celebrated their late equalizer, projectiles rained down from the stands, and several spectators invaded the pitch, forcing the referee to prematurely end the game.

In the other Group B match, Iraq and Ukraine will face off later today.

Meanwhile, Spain, the silver medalists from Tokyo, began their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Uzbekistan. Despite taking the lead through Marc Pubill, Spain were pegged back by a penalty converted by Eldor Shomurodov. Sergio Gomez secured the win for Spain in the second half.

The opening day of the Olympic football tournament has set the stage for what promises to be a thrilling competition. The match between France and the United States later today is expected to be a highlight.
