Cape Town – Table View High School, a Cape Town high school is facing mounting pressure after allegations surfaced that a teacher used a racial slur against a group of Black students. The incident, which occurred last week, has sparked outrage among parents and students alike, with many questioning the school’s handling of the matter.
A parent of one of the affected students expressed deep concern over the school’s decision to allow the teacher to continue teaching while an investigation is underway. The parent claimed that their child returned home from school feeling “angry and useless” after the teacher allegedly used the K-word during a history lesson.
The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has confirmed that it is investigating the matter, but the parent believes the school should have taken immediate disciplinary action against the teacher. “How do you allow the same person who a group of children, Black children, laid a complaint against… to go back to the same class?” the parent questioned.
The incident has reignited the ongoing debate about racism in South African schools and the effectiveness of disciplinary measures taken against educators who transgress racial boundaries. While the WCED has initiated an investigation, the speed and transparency of the process will be crucial in determining the public’s perception of the school’s commitment to addressing the issue.
