Tragedy Strikes Again: Two Children Killed, 48 Injured in KwaZulu-Natal Bus Accident

In a tragic incident in KwaZulu-Natal, two children have lost their lives and 48 others have been injured after a bus transporting learners from Gelekedle High School overturned on the road between Nongoma and Vryheid. The accident occurred on the R618, and four of the injured children are reported to be in serious condition.
KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson, Sindi Msimang, stated that preliminary investigations suggest the driver lost control of the vehicle. Shockingly, the driver allegedly fled the scene after the crash, and authorities are currently searching for him.

This devastating accident comes just days after a deadly weekend in the province, where a total of 21 people lost their lives in multiple crashes. The string of incidents has raised significant concerns about road safety in KwaZulu-Natal, prompting calls for urgent measures to prevent further tragedies.
Earlier today, Siboniso Duma, the MEC for Transport in the province, held a media briefing to address the growing crisis. In his statement, Duma promised to take immediate action to improve road safety following the recent spate of deadly accidents in the province.
“This is a time for urgent intervention. We cannot continue to lose lives on our roads,” Duma said, underscoring the need for enhanced traffic enforcement and public awareness campaigns to tackle reckless driving and improve road conditions.
A Community in Mourning
The community of Hlobane, where the affected Gelekedle High School is located, is in mourning as they come to terms with the loss of two young lives. Meanwhile, the injured children are receiving treatment in local hospitals, with medical teams working tirelessly to provide the necessary care, especially for those in critical condition.
As authorities continue to investigate the cause of the accident and search for the missing driver, the families of the victims and the broader community are calling for justice and demanding swift action to prevent such incidents from recurring.
