Two Limpopo provincial traffic officers faced corruption charges in the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court on Monday, September 9. The pair allegedly demanded a R200 bribe from a motorist during a roadblock, leading to their arrest and court appearance.

Accused of both taking a bribe and obstructing justice, the two officers allegedly colluded during a roadside stop near Moutse in the Sekhukhune District. Their actions are now under scrutiny as they face serious charges.

Reports reveal that the officials pulled over a vehicle with three people inside after catching the driver using a cellphone behind the wheel, a clear breach of traffic regulations.

Rather than issuing a fine, the officials reportedly asked for a R100 bribe to ignore the infraction. When the driver claimed he only had R200, the passengers combined their money to meet the demand.

After supposedly accepting the R200, the traffic officials told the driver they would keep the full amount since they lacked change. However, one of the officers then identified himself and arrested his colleagues on the spot for corruption.

During the follow-up bail hearings, Masina was refused bail after the court determined he did not meet the requirements set forth by the Criminal Procedure Act.

Pitso, Masina’s co-accused, was granted bail of R20,000, a substantial increase from the R1,000 his attorney had requested. The court considered the severity of the charges in its decision.

State Advocate Martin Molokwane argued that the bail amount should reflect the seriousness of the charge, emphasizing that corruption, no matter the sum, erodes trust in public service.

The case has been adjourned until October 30 for additional investigation.
