Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), reported a significant heist that occurred on Thursday afternoon. The ZRP has confirmed that they are actively investigating the armed robbery that took place late on October 3, 2024, at a financial institution situated at the intersection of 9th Avenue and Fife Street in Bulawayo. The incident involved a cash-in-transit security team, which was confronted by six armed suspects, as detailed by Nyathi.
Nyathi characterized the circumstances of the robbery as notably suspicious. Early investigations reveal that approximately USD 4,000,000 in cash was stolen, and the nature of the robbery suggests the possibility of an inside job or a leak of sensitive information. As the investigation continues, Nyathi assured the public that the Zimbabwean police are committed to upholding the law impartially.
The ZRP is calling on members of the community who have any relevant information regarding the robbery to come forward. According to the state-owned Chronicle newspaper in Zimbabwe, surveillance cameras captured the license plate of the vehicle involved in the EcoBank robbery in Bulawayo, but the registration of the plate has not yet been verified.
A video making rounds on social media shows six masked individuals brandishing firearms and loading boxes into a white Ford Ranger before speeding off. A marked vehicle from the private security company Safeguard was also present at the scene.
