Strategic Vaccination Drive Launched to Tackle Mpox Surge in Africa

Last month, a vital initiative called the Access and Allocation Mechanism (AAM) was introduced to ensure equitable and efficient distribution of mpox vaccines across Africa. This effort addresses the urgent need for vaccination, particularly in the most affected regions. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the progress, noting that over 50,000 individuals have already been vaccinated in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, thanks to significant contributions from the United States and the European Commission.

This development follows concerning reports from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), which recorded a dramatic 500 percent increase in mpox cases compared to the previous year. The disease now impacts 19 countries across the continent, raising critical public health concerns. In mid-August, the WHO declared mpox a global health emergency in response to the emergence and rapid spread of a new strain, clade 1b, originating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and spreading to neighboring countries.

Dr. Ghebreyesus further detailed the strategic distribution of about 900,000 vaccine doses, prioritizing areas with significant transmission rates of the new variant. He stressed the importance of timely vaccination to curb the disease’s spread. The AAM plays a crucial role in the global effort to combat mpox and protect vulnerable populations across Africa.
