A suspected hijacker, believed to be part of a criminal gang, was shot and killed by police during a dramatic confrontation in Tshwane. His three accomplices were swiftly arrested, putting an end to their violent spree. The capture marks a significant blow to the gang, as authorities continue to tackle the rising crime in the area.
In a tense operation, Tshwane Metro Police shot and killed a suspected car hijacker, while swiftly apprehending his three accomplices. The dramatic bust highlights the ongoing battle against rising vehicle theft in the area.
According to TMPD spokesperson, Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba, the Tshwane Metro Police Department’s elite tactical unit sprang into action following a backup request from a vehicle tracking company in Winterveld.
Mahamba disclosed that officers from the vehicle tracking company found themselves in a fierce gun battle with suspects after they hijacked a Toyota Hilux bakkie.
Mahamba reported that when TMPD officers arrived at the scene, they discovered one suspect had been fatally shot, while a member of the car tracking team was also wounded. In a shocking twist, one suspect managed to break free from his handcuffs and flee with two others.
The TMPD’s tactical and drug units, alongside the South African Police Service, quickly joined forces to chase down the escaped hijackers following the backup request. Their relentless pursuit intensified as the criminals tried to evade capture.
Mahamba confirmed that the handcuffed suspect was quickly recaptured, while the remaining two were discovered hiding in a nearby home. All three were arrested on charges of car theft, and authorities recovered the stolen bakkie along with a firearm at the scene.
Mahamba emphasised that unlike most car thieves who ditch the vehicles and flee, this time there was no place for the criminals to hide. “The TMPD is taking a zero-tolerance approach to crime, leaving no stone unturned. Our officers remain vigilant and dedicated to keeping the community safe,” he stated, reaffirming their relentless commitment to fighting crime.
