A destructive fire ravaged a settlement in Johannesburg on Tuesday, causing extensive damage with around 1,500 homes consumed by flames, according to local officials. The fire is suspected to have been ignited by an exploding paraffin stove, a common household item in the region.
Kevin Jones, a longtime member of the community, recounted his experience during the turmoil: “I was lucky to preserve all my possessions, and gratefully, most of my property remained unharmed by the fire. However, my heart aches for my fellow community members. Just look around—many families are now homeless. Everything they owned, their cherished memories and livelihoods, have been destroyed.”
Puseletso Koetje, another resident impacted by the fire, described her terrifying experience after receiving distressing news while at work. “I received a call while I was at my job informing me about the blaze, and I hurried back home. As soon as I arrived, I witnessed chaos; the men in our neighborhood came together to try and put out the flames, but it was in vain. The fire had escalated too rapidly, fueled by gas cylinders that worsened the situation and caused the inferno to expand uncontrollably.”
Many structures in the area were built from lightweight materials such as plastic, wood, and corrugated metal, which are especially susceptible to fire. In response, local authorities have deployed disaster management teams to support those impacted. They plan to provide food parcels and other necessary supplies to the victims, as the community embarks on the lengthy journey of recovery and rebuilding.
