Two Arrested Following Arson Attack on Putco Buses in Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga, South Africa – Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the torching of over 50 Putco buses in the Nkangala District on Monday night. The brazen attack has raised concerns about public safety and potential disruptions to the local economy.

Police Spokesperson Donald Mdhluli confirmed the arrests, stating that the suspects were apprehended last night. The incident involved a group of armed individuals traveling in a Quantum, a minibus, and a sedan. They targeted multiple Putco bus depots across the district, setting the vehicles ablaze.

The attack was not only destructive but also violent. Several Putco employees were assaulted, with one security guard sustaining a gunshot wound. Other employees suffered injuries during the reported attacks. The assailants, who were wearing balaclavas and black clothing, held the employees at gunpoint during the arson spree.

A break in the case came when one of the suspects was found in possession of a mobile phone belonging to one of the victims. The suspect was also carrying a magazine for a 9mm pistol, though it was empty.

Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Major General Dr. Zeph Mkhwanazi, praised the rapid response of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in apprehending the suspects so quickly.

The torching of the buses has significant implications for the local economy. Putco is a major public transportation provider in the region, and the destruction of a large portion of their fleet is likely to cause disruptions to commuter services.
