Muizenburg, Cape Town – A Malawian national was arrested in Muizenburg on Thursday morning for the illegal possession of abalone. The suspect was apprehended by members of the Cape Town K9 Unit during a routine patrol.
The suspect was driving a Toyota Corolla when it was stopped and searched by the K9 Unit. During the search, officers discovered 562 units of abalone, with an estimated street value of R120,000.
The suspect, a 22-year-old man, was arrested and charged with possession of abalone. He is expected to appear in the Muizenburg Magistrates’ Court soon.
The arrest is a significant victory in the fight against abalone poaching, which is a major problem in South Africa. Abalone is a highly prized delicacy in Asia, and poachers are willing to risk arrest to harvest it.
The SAPS has vowed to continue its efforts to combat abalone poaching and bring those responsible to justice.
