PAARL – A romantic Valentine’s Day date took an unexpected turn for two suspected lovers today as they appeared in the Paarl Magistrates Court, facing charges related to the operation of an alleged illegal steroid manufacturing lab. The pair, both 27 years old, were arrested on Thursday during a raid by the Hawks at their business premises in Zanwyk Industrial Park on Old Paarl Road.
The Hawks’ investigation began in January 2023 following a tip-off about steroids being couriered from Franschoek and distributed locally. After intercepting several parcels, tests confirmed the presence of illegal substances, leading investigators to identify the two suspects.
During Thursday’s raid, authorities uncovered a clandestine operation within the industrial park. The premises contained powder, tablets, and equipment indicative of steroid production, including specialized machines and an oven.
Hawks spokesperson, Siyabulela Vukubi, confirmed the suspects’ court appearance. The pair are accused of illegally manufacturing steroids at the location. Their Valentine’s Day court appearance marks a significant step in the ongoing investigation into the distribution of illegal steroids in the region.
