Zanzou Nightclub Bouncer to Face Court on Torture, Rape Charges

PRETORIA – A 41-year-old bouncer from the Zanzou nightclub in Hatfield is scheduled to appear in the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Monday morning, facing a slew of serious charges related to the alleged sexual and physical assault of patrons. The arrest follows the circulation of disturbing viral videos depicting the brutal treatment of young men at the popular Pretoria establishment.
The suspect, a Congolese national, was apprehended in Yeoville, Johannesburg, on Thursday during a routine patrol by Johannesburg Metro Police officers. He was reportedly identified from the graphic videos that sparked public outrage and a police investigation.
The man now faces charges of compelled rape, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and crimen injuria. The charges stem from allegations that he was involved in the torture of multiple young men at the Zanzou nightclub.
The Zanzou nightclub has been under intense scrutiny since the initial videos surfaced, showing bouncers engaging in acts of extreme violence against patrons. Further videos have since emerged, revealing a pattern of abuse and assault at the venue.
Police Minister Bheki Cele assured victims of the Zanzou nightclub torture that witness protection would be made available.
The arrested individual is one of eight suspects identified by police in connection with the incidents. However, he is the first to be located and taken into custody.
“We are confident that the remaining suspects will be nabbed and will face the full might of the law,” a police spokesperson stated.
The arrest comes a week after the initial videos went viral, prompting widespread condemnation and calls for action. The investigation remains ongoing, and police are urging anyone with information related to the incidents to come forward. The community awaits the court proceedings, hoping for justice for the victims of the alleged abuse.
