On Friday, thousands of women in Nigeria came together in Lagos to mark International Women’s Day with a lively and spirited celebration that emphasized the critical roles women play in society. The event brought together a diverse array of participants, many of whom were dressed in purple—recognized as a symbol of justice and dignity. Attendees danced energetically and waved vibrant banners that showcased the achievements of women across various sectors.
This year’s theme, “Accelerate Action,” holds particular importance as it commemorates the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a key global initiative dedicated to promoting women’s rights and gender equality. This milestone serves as both a celebration of progress and a call to address the persistent barriers to women’s full empowerment.
Amid the celebrations, moments of introspection also took place. Social worker Fabayo Temiloluwa reflected on the ongoing challenges women face in politics, saying, “In Nigeria, society often suppresses women’s voices and undermines their presence in politics.” She underlined the importance of women taking a more proactive role by pursuing education and fully engaging in political processes to advocate for their rights and influence policy decisions.
The United Nations formally acknowledged International Women’s Day in 1977, although its roots trace back to the early 20th-century labor movements, which aimed to address issues like working conditions and suffrage. This historical background underscores the enduring struggle for gender equality and the significance of global solidarity among women.
