The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Co-operative Governance stated that the provincial disaster management center is actively organizing efforts to respond to the aftermath of two nights of intense rainfall that have heavily impacted the region. Cleanup operations are underway in numerous affected areas, with eThekwini experiencing particularly severe destruction caused by the storm.

Sadly, the extreme weather has claimed at least two lives. A level 4 weather warning remains active across the province, signifying ongoing risks of disruptive rainfall and flooding, which endanger infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and low-lying residential areas.

Senzelwe Mzila, the spokesperson for the provincial Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), shared further information on the tragic events during the storms. On Thursday, a devastating incident occurred in Pinetown, where a 54-year-old woman tragically lost her life after being swept away while attempting to cross a bridge submerged by rising floodwaters.

In another heartbreaking occurrence in Vikimithi, part of the Umlalazi local municipality, a lightning strike led to the death of a 10-year-old girl. Several family members sustained injuries and are currently being treated at the hospital. The MEC has expressed sincere condolences to the bereaved families and extended wishes for the speedy recovery of those injured.

Drivers are being urged to proceed with extreme caution, as road conditions remain hazardous and slippery due to continuous rainfall. Emergency and disaster management teams are maintaining vigilant monitoring of high-risk areas to ensure prompt responses are executed when required. Ensuring public safety remains the primary focus during this difficult period.
