Johannesburg City Council Advances Renaming of Sandton Drive

The Johannesburg City Council has confirmed its decision to rename Sandton Drive to Leila Khaled Drive, notwithstanding opposition from political stakeholders and community representatives.
Leila Khaled, a Palestinian activist recognized for her role in the Palestinian liberation movement, remains a polarizing figure in international discourse. The renaming initiative has consequently elicited divergent responses from political factions, civic organizations, and the broader public.
A formal motion proposed by the Democratic Alliance (DA) to retain the name Sandton Drive was defeated in the council by a majority vote. The DA has contended that the renaming was executed without adequate public consultation and reflects a misalignment of municipal priorities.
Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku, DA leader in Johannesburg, has openly criticized the decision, asserting that municipal resources would be more effectively allocated toward addressing pressing infrastructural deficiencies and service delivery concerns.
“It is deeply disrespectful to the residents of Sandton Drive, who have explicitly voiced their concerns about the absence of consultation on this matter. Given the extensive challenges facing the city, including failing infrastructure and deteriorating service delivery, renaming streets should not be a priority,” Kayser-Echeozonjoku stated.
Despite these objections, the Johannesburg City Council remains committed to the renaming process, which is part of a broader municipal effort to recognize figures associated with global socio-political movements. The implementation timeline and logistical considerations related to the transition remain under discussion.
