Tembisa Hospital Fire: Minister Reassures Community on Safety Measures

Deputy Health Minister Joe Phaahla addressed the media yesterday regarding the ongoing fire incident at Tembisa Hospital, clarifying that yesterday’s fire is not connected to the blaze that occurred over the weekend. This clarification responds to increasing public worries about the hospital’s safety and emergency services.
During his visit to the hospital, Phaahla carefully examined the damage to the file room, which had suffered significant destruction due to the fire. He engaged with the hospital management team to devise effective recovery strategies aimed at lessening the impact of these unfortunate events on healthcare services.
The incident today took place just 48 hours after a large fire erupted in the hospital’s emergency unit on Saturday, raising concerns among healthcare workers and the community regarding the facility’s operational reliability. Phaahla seized this opportunity to stress that, despite their close timing, the two fires were completely separate events. “Today’s fire was not a continuation of Saturday’s fire,” he asserted. “The site of today’s incident is different from where the earlier fire occurred. There is no direct connection between these two incidents, and unless proven otherwise, we affirm that a completely different cause must have triggered the fire in this new location.” His remarks aimed to reassure the local community, patients, and hospital staff about the organization’s steadfast commitment to safety during these challenging times.
The Deputy Minister outlined a business continuity plan that has been established to ensure that healthcare services remain largely unaffected throughout this period. Although the emergency unit and outpatient department are currently closed for safety and investigation purposes, walk-in patients are still being accepted. Ambulance services have been redirected to nearby hospitals, such as Tambo Memorial and Edenvale Hospital, to guarantee that emergency care continues without interruption.
Phaahla also noted that, fortunately, no injuries were reported from either fire, highlighting the hospital’s dedication to the safety of patients and staff. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that the fires inflicted considerable damage, including the loss of important patient records and costly medical equipment. Investigations are currently in progress to identify the causes of the fires, which will involve forensic examinations and thorough assessments of air quality and safety in the impacted areas. The Gauteng Department of Health has confirmed that forensic teams are thoroughly investigating both incidents, including the possibility of arson. The Democratic Alliance has urged for prompt and comprehensive inquiries, citing previous allegations of misconduct at the hospital that could undermine public trust.
Phaahla concluded his comments by reaffirming the hospital’s dedication to delivering essential medical services during the recovery phase.
