Pope Francis Passes Away at 88: A Life of Humility and Devotion

Pope Francis, the 266th leader of the Catholic Church and a transformative figure in modern religious history, passed away peacefully on Easter Monday at the age of 88. The Vatican confirmed that he died at 7:35am at his residence in Casa Santa Marta, after more than a decade of service as the Bishop of Rome.
At 9:45am, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, officially declared the Pope’s death. “Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis,” said Cardinal Farrell. “We commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on 17 December 1936 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, made history as the first pope from the Americas and the Southern Hemisphere. He was also the first non-European pontiff since Gregory III in the 8th century.
Elected in 2013 following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, Pope Francis was widely recognized for his humility, compassion, and unwavering dedication to the poor and marginalized. His papacy was marked by efforts to reform the Church, emphasize social justice, and foster interfaith dialogue.
Tributes poured in from around the world. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned his passing, calling Pope Francis a “beacon of compassion, humility and spiritual courage.” In a heartfelt message posted on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote: “Deeply pained by the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. In this hour of grief and remembrance, my heartfelt condolences to the global Catholic community. Pope Francis will always be remembered as a beacon of compassion, humility and spiritual courage by millions across the world. From a young age, he devoted himself towards realising the ideals of Lord Christ. He diligently served the poor and downtrodden. For those who were suffering, he ignited a spirit of hope.”
In a departure from recent tradition, Pope Francis will be buried at the Basilica of St Mary Major in Rome, becoming the first pope in more than a century to be interred outside the Vatican grounds.
As the Catholic Church enters a period of mourning and prepares for the upcoming conclave, the world reflects on the enduring legacy of a pope who chose mercy over judgment, service over grandeur, and humanity over hierarchy.
