Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis has voiced her team’s firm commitment to securing a victory in their upcoming quarterfinal showdown against Senegal in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tonight.
The South African squad, who are the current title holders, are determined to continue their successful campaign and defend their crown.
South Africa comes into the match on the back of an emphatic 4-0 win over Mali in the final group stage game, a result that not only showcased their attacking prowess but also secured their place in the knockout rounds.
That victory has boosted the team’s morale and put them in a strong position as they look ahead to the high-stakes encounter with Senegal.
Addressing the media during a pre-match press conference, Ellis spoke with conviction about her team’s mindset and the challenges that lie ahead. While confident in Banyana Banyana’s abilities, she emphasised the importance of showing due respect to their opponents.
She was quick to caution against any complacency, reminding everyone that Senegal remains a formidable side despite some earlier setbacks in the tournament.
“As I mentioned, underestimating an opponent can lead to dire consequences. Senegal may have faced defeats, but they showed remarkable tenacity in those tight encounters,” Ellis remarked, referencing the Senegalese side’s spirited performances against tough opposition such as Morocco and Zambia.
Ellis made it clear that she anticipates a physically intense and competitive match.
She pointed out that Senegal, known as the Lionesses of Teranga, are likely to pose a significant challenge due to their resilience and physicality. “Senegal will undoubtedly put up a fight, and we are prepared to push ourselves to the limit,” she stated, reaffirming the team’s readiness to meet the challenge head-on.
The coach also took a moment to reflect on Banyana Banyana’s journey through the group stage. She acknowledged that the defending champions did not start the tournament as strongly as they had planned.
However, she was encouraged by how the team grew into the competition and delivered a commanding performance in their final group fixture against Mali.
“Our start to the group stages was not as strong as we had hoped, but we finished with great momentum. As the tournament progressed, we better managed player fatigue and our squad began to understand the significance of scoring early. This tactic not only allows us to control the match but also helps neutralise the threats posed by our opponents,” she explained.
Now 62 years old, Ellis brings a wealth of experience and tactical insight to her role as head coach.
She offered a thoughtful assessment of the physical nature of Senegal’s style of play, acknowledging that physical dominance is not one of South Africa’s primary strengths.
Still, she expressed confidence in the team’s ability to rise to the occasion through strategic planning and self-awareness.
“We know that we won’t suddenly become more physically imposing overnight, but we are acutely aware of our strengths and weaknesses,” she said, adding that the technical team has devised a comprehensive game plan tailored to overcome the specific threats posed by the Senegalese side.
As the quarterfinal looms, Ellis reiterated the team’s commitment to give nothing less than their best effort on the pitch.
Her message to fans and critics alike was one of focus, determination, and respect for the tournament. “We’re ready to give it our all and will approach this game with meticulous preparation and determination,” she asserted.
With the stakes high and the pressure mounting, Ellis’s words reflect a team that is grounded, prepared, and fully focused on achieving their goal: continuing their journey toward a successful WAFCON title defence.
