After a tense encounter that concluded with a dramatic penalty shootout, Banyana Banyana emerged victorious over Senegal, securing their spot in the semi-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). As defending champions, they now prepare to face their long-time rivals, the Super Falcons of Nigeria, in a much-anticipated clash.
The match took place at Honneur Stadium in Oujda, Morocco, where Banyana Banyana showcased both determination and skill. Given the tough group Senegal was part of and how they fought hard to advance, we expected a well-contested match. In the initial 15 minutes, our players appeared a bit nervous as they acclimated to the rhythm of the game. However, once we found our footing, we efficiently neutralised the threats posed by Senegal’s two formidable tall strikers. We managed their long balls with effectiveness, although there were moments when we gave the ball away rather easily. It’s clear that Senegal has made significant strides since our last encounter, and I want to commend their coach for the fantastic job he has done with the team.”
Banyana Banyana will face Nigeria on Tuesday, July 22, at Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca. With both teams carrying strong legacies and competitive energy, the semi-final is expected to deliver an exciting and fiercely contested match as they battle for a place in the final.
