Mzansi has been absolutely glued to its screens this weekend after a four-minute video went viral showing AmaZulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini in a heated argument with Queen Nomzamo Myeni – and the fallout has been a full dramatic arc from royal crisis to public apology, all in the space of a few days.
The footage, which began circulating on Thursday, shows the King raising his voice at the Queen in a private exchange that was never meant for public consumption. In the video, he accuses her of infidelity, questions her conduct as a royal wife, takes issue with her social media presence, and makes threats that left viewers divided – some appalled, others oddly sympathetic to the complexities of royal life playing out in front of everyone’s eyes. The Queen, visibly distressed, says at one point: “This is the life that I live, day and night.” Those eight words hit the internet like a thunderclap.
What followed was a textbook case of crisis management, royal-household edition. The King’s office broke its silence, stressing that the video was old and no longer reflected the current state of the relationship. He then went further – issuing a statement expressing remorse for his utterances and asking those hurt by his words to receive his sincere apology. He specifically apologised to the Nazareth Baptist Church and its leader Unyazi Lwezulu, who was also referenced disparagingly in the footage. Royal spokesperson Mpikayise Buthelezi confirmed that the King and Queen had reconciled and were continuing to fulfil their royal duties together. As if to prove the point, the couple appeared side by side at an official engagement at KwaKhangelamankengane Royal Palace this week.
The Shembe Church leader has since extended forgiveness. But Mzansi has opinions – many, loud ones – and the conversation about privacy, accountability, and what it means to be a public figure in the era of leaked videos is not going anywhere.
