DA Demands Full Disclosure on R31 Million Spent by SA Delegation at 2026 FIFA World Cup

Questions about the government’s financial management of its World Cup participation show no signs of dissipating.
Cape Town – The Democratic Alliance has formally demanded a full accounting from Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie regarding an estimated R31 million spent by the South African government delegation during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, accusing the minister of evasion and a refusal to provide the public with basic transparency about how public funds were deployed.
The DA’s challenge focuses on the size and composition of the delegation, the nature of the expenditure, and whether proper procurement and oversight processes were followed. McKenzie has been a visible and vocal figure in South Africa’s World Cup engagement, positioning the tournament as a platform for trade, tourism, and national branding. The DA argues that this framing does not justify the scale of spending without detailed justification.
South Africa did not host the tournament and was not a participating nation – raising pointed questions about what a delegation of that reported cost was mandated to achieve, and whether the outcomes justify the expenditure. The minister’s office has not yet provided a line-item breakdown of costs.
The matter is likely to proceed to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts and Culture, where McKenzie will be required to present a formal account. The DA has indicated it will pursue the matter through every available accountability mechanism if satisfactory disclosure is not forthcoming.
