Who Is Brandy? (Let’s Remind Ourselves)

To call Brandy one of the most influential artists in pop culture history is not hyperbole – it is simply accurate.

She emerged in 1994 with a self-titled debut album that went four-times platinum before she had finished high school. Her voice was immediately identifiable: layered, breathy on the verses, devastating on the runs, with a control over dynamics that most vocalists spend entire careers chasing. She was seventeen. She sounded like she had been singing for centuries.

What followed was a career of extraordinary depth. Her 1998 album Never Say Never went sixteen-times platinum – an almost inconceivable number – and featured The Boy Is Mine, the iconic duet with Monica that won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group. The song sat at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for thirteen weeks. It became one of the defining songs of its decade.

Cape Town, 14 December: A Sunday night show in the Mother City the week before the full festive rush kicks in. Pair it with a weekend in the Winelands – Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl – or simply enjoy the Cape summer in full bloom. The Grand Arena at GrandWest is a short Uber from the City Bowl and well-serviced from across the peninsula.

Pretoria, 17–18 December: The week before Christmas, with the city fully in festive spirit. Sunbet Arena at Times Square is one of South Africa’s best live venues – excellent acoustics, good sightlines, efficient entry and exit. Two nights means there is genuinely no reason to miss it if you are in Gauteng for the holidays.
