SALDANHA, South Africa – May 13, 2024 – A glimmer of hope for answers may emerge today as four individuals appear in the Vredenburg Magistrate’s Court in connection with the disappearance of six-year-old Joslin Smith.
Joslin vanished nearly three months ago from her home in the Middelpos informal settlement. Despite extensive searches by authorities, the little girl’s whereabouts remain unknown.
The four suspects facing charges include Joslin’s mother, Kelly Smith, and her boyfriend, Jacquen Appollis. Both stand accused of trafficking in persons with the purpose of exploitation and kidnapping.
A third suspect, Lorentia Lombaard, who faces similar human trafficking and kidnapping charges, abandoned her bail application last month.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila has stated that the NPA will oppose any future bail applications submitted by the remaining defendants.
This case has cast a dark shadow over the Saldanha community. The possibility of a mother’s involvement in her child’s disappearance adds a layer of tragic complexity to the situation.
Today’s court appearance could offer the first official glimpse into the prosecution’s case and potentially shed light on the circumstances surrounding Joslin’s disappearance. It remains to be seen whether the court proceedings will bring long-awaited answers or further agonizing uncertainty for Joslin’s family and the wider community.
