BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa – Thapelo Morena emerged as the hero for Bafana Bafana on Tuesday night, scoring a second-half brace to secure a vital 3-1 victory over Zimbabwe in their World Cup qualifying match.
The win, achieved at the iconic Free State Stadium, not only reignited Bafana Bafana’s qualifying campaign but also brought back cherished memories for the Bloemfontein faithful. It was on this very ground 14 years ago that South Africa secured their only group stage win at the 2010 World Cup.
The passionate Bloemfontein crowd, starved of top-flight football since the departure of Bloemfontein Celtic, witnessed a dramatic encounter. Bafana Bafana took the lead in the opening minute through Iqraam Rayners after a defensive error by Zimbabwe’s Munashe Garananga.
However, their joy was short-lived as Tawanda Chirewa equalized for the visitors within two minutes, silencing the electric atmosphere.
Oswin Appollis, replacing the injured and under-pressure Percy Tau, injected some much-needed creativity into the Bafana Bafana attack. He came close to restoring the lead on 19 minutes but was denied by Zimbabwean goalkeeper Goefrey Chitsumba.
The absence of a natural striker like Lyle Foster, who remained on the bench despite his return to the squad, was a concern for coach Hugo Broos. Foster’s solitary figure on the pitch during the pre-match inspection seemed to reflect his isolation throughout the encounter.
Rayners spurned a golden opportunity to double Bafana’s lead before halftime, failing to convert Appollis’s cross. Chirewa nearly capitalized on the missed chance but saw his curling effort fly past the South African goal.
The introduction of Morena in the second half proved decisive. The Bloemfontein native, a hero on his home turf, capitalized on a parried save from Chitsumba to put Bafana Bafana back in front on 55 minutes. The crowd erupted, celebrating their local hero.
Morena wasn’t finished yet. He sealed the victory in the 78th minute, rounding Chitsumba after beating the offside trap and slotting home to send the Free State Stadium into a frenzy.
The win puts Bafana Bafana in a strong position in Group C, level on points with leaders Rwanda. Coach Broos, who visibly expressed his frustrations with referee Mohamed Mansour’s decisions, will be hoping to build on this momentum.
Bafana Bafana will resume their qualifying campaign in March 2024 with a home fixture against Lesotho.
