The highly publicized trial of Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso, accused of human trafficking, rape, and sexual assault, has been postponed until August 21st. This delay comes after the defense, led by Advocate Peter Daubermann, filed an application to have all witness testimonies dismissed.

Omotoso and his co-defendants, Zukiswa Sitho and Lusanda Sulani, stand accused of committing these crimes against several women, including minors, between 2009 and 2017 at Omotoso’s church, Jesus Dominion International, in Gqeberha, South Africa.

The crux of the defense’s argument hinges on alleged interference by former state prosecutors, Advocates Nceba Ntelwa and Ishmed Cerfontein, in obtaining witness statements. Daubermann claims these prosecutors engaged in unethical and potentially corrupt practices, questioning why they weren’t called to testify. He argues that their involvement has compromised the fairness of the trial.

State prosecutor Advocate Chris Mouton strongly refutes these claims, asserting that there’s no evidence of witness coercion or the prosecutors obtaining evidence unlawfully. Mouton emphasizes the lack of concrete proof to support accusations of corruption against the former prosecutors.

Judge Irma Schoeman will deliver her ruling on the defense’s application on August 21st. This decision will determine whether witness testimonies stand or are dismissed. The three accused face a total of 32 charges, including rape, sexual assault, and human trafficking.

This delay in the trial process adds another layer of complexity to this already sensitive case. The August ruling will be a critical turning point, potentially impacting the future direction of the case and the ability of the court to deliver justice.
