Mathe announced that the woman is facing a drug trafficking charge and is set to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate Court in the near future.
On Sunday, a 24-year-old Brazilian drug trafficker was apprehended after authorities discovered over three kilograms of narcotics concealed around his body.
Mathe revealed, “This marks the second drug trafficker this week caught with cocaine wrapped around their upper body.” The suspect had just arrived at the bustling OR Tambo airport from São Paulo.
Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk, the police spokesperson, confirmed that the drugs were identified as cocaine, with a staggering street value of R1.8 million.
In recent weeks, police have apprehended 14 individuals at the airport on drug trafficking charges. In October, authorities seized 80kg of Khat from three individuals, including two Dutch traffickers.
In another bust, a 43-year-old from Paraguay was arrested upon arriving from São Paulo. Police revealed that the man had swallowed several foreign objects, believed to contain cocaine.
Mathe stated, “OR Tambo International Airport police are relentlessly targeting drug traffickers as they arrive, sending a clear warning that South Africa is no haven for drug dealers.”
