Heartbreaking Tragedy: 14 Lives Lost in N9 Highway Collision Near Graaff-Reinet

Transport Minister Barbara Creecy and Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa have conveyed their sincere condolences to the families of the 14 people who sadly lost their lives in a serious accident on the N9 highway near Graaff-Reinet earlier yesterday.

The unfortunate incident took place around 5:30 AM and involved a head-on crash between a Toyota Quantum minibus and a Hyundai Creta. All six people in the Hyundai, who were traveling from Middelburg to Graaff-Reinet, as well as eight passengers in the Quantum, heading in the opposite direction, lost their lives. This situation highlights the risks faced by those using the roads.

Preliminary reports suggest that the force of the collision was substantial, resulting in the immediate deaths of all the individuals in both vehicles. Furthermore, eleven other individuals from the Quantum suffered various injuries and were quickly taken to local hospitals for urgent medical attention. Their conditions are presently under evaluation, and medical personnel are administering the necessary treatment.

Minister Creecy described the event as a heartbreaking tragedy that has profoundly impacted the community. She offered her thoughts and prayers to the mourning families and expressed hope for a swift recovery for the injured.

Deputy Minister Hlengwa stressed the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures, urging all motorists to be more cautious and to take personal accountability for their own safety and that of others. He called for increased watchfulness, especially given the rise in traffic during the holiday season.

In light of this tragic occurrence, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has dispatched a specialized team to thoroughly investigate the details surrounding the accident. The results of this inquiry will be made public once completed. Authorities are committed to improving road safety measures, particularly during times of heightened road activity, and are encouraging drivers to stay alert and responsible.
