South Africa Embraces Ubuntu on Mandela Day: Surgical Marathons and Digital Inclusion Lead the Way

South Africa – July 18, 2025 – Today, on International Nelson Mandela Day, South Africa is alive with the spirit of “Madiba” as communities, government entities, and private enterprises unite to honour his enduring legacy through acts of service and compassion. The theme for Mandela Day 2025, “It’s still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity,” resonates deeply across the nation, inspiring tangible efforts to improve the lives of vulnerable citizens.
One of the most impactful initiatives taking place today is the Gauteng Department of Health’s (GDoH) third edition of its Surgical Marathons. In a monumental effort to alleviate the burden of surgical backlogs and improve quality of life, public hospitals across Gauteng, in collaboration with private partners, have pledged to conduct over 1,000 surgical procedures. This ambitious undertaking prioritizes critical operations such as prostate, cleft palate, cataract, and stoma surgeries, all vital for individuals’ well-being.
“This reflects the commitment by health professionals to improve the health and quality of life for vulnerable individuals in our communities,” stated Motalatale Modiba, spokesperson for the GDoH. Gauteng Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko is personally overseeing the marathon, conducting walkabouts in theatres and wards at facilities like Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, Helen Joseph Hospital, Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, and Dr. SK Matseke Hospital. The day also marks the reopening of a refurbished Urology Unit at Charlotte Maxeke and a newly upgraded Breast Centre for Excellence at Helen Joseph Hospital, further enhancing access to specialized care.
Beyond the operating theatres, the spirit of Madiba is also fostering digital inclusion. Telecommunications giant Vodacom is making headlines with its “R67 smartphone initiative,” aiming to bridge the digital divide. In honour of Mandela’s 67 years of fighting for equality, Vodacom is offering pre-selected prepaid customers using 2G handsets the opportunity to upgrade to a 4G Kicka 6 smartphone for a symbolic R67. This special offer, significantly discounting the R699 retail price, is initially available in KwaZulu-Natal and will expand to Mpumalanga and Limpopo.
“Millions of South Africans still rely on 2G devices, limiting their ability to access essential digital services, such as education, employment and financial services. By offering affordable 4G smartphones, we are empowering people to participate fully in the digital economy,” said Rishaad Tayob, Director of Consumer Business at Vodacom South Africa. In an extra gesture of goodwill today, Vodacom is also giving away 67 smartphones as part of its “Surprise and Delight” initiative, rewarding loyal customers and encouraging the shift to 4G connectivity.
Across the country, countless other initiatives, big and small, are taking place. From community clean-ups and food drives to educational workshops and visits to orphanages, South Africans are dedicating their 67 minutes (or more) to making a positive impact. The Nelson Mandela Foundation’s annual Walk and Run, slated for tomorrow at Wanderers Stadium, continues to encourage collective action and promote a healthier lifestyle in Madiba’s honour.
